NEW BIG BELLY TRASH CANS
The Fordham Road BID is proud to have installed new BigBelly trash and recycling recepticles in two locations in the district: at East Fordham Road and Webster Ave, and at East Fordham Road and Grand Concourse. These compactors were donated to the BID by the office of Bronx Borough President Ruban Diaz Jr. The BigBelly® Solar Compactor is a patented compacting trash receptacle that is completely self-powered. Instead of requiring a grid connection, BigBelly uses solar power for 100% of its energy needs. The unit takes up as much space as the "footprint" of an ordinary receptacle—but its capacity is five times greater. Increased capacity reduces collection trips and can cut fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. BigBelly also provides cost efficiencies from labor savings, fuel cost and maintenance savings, as well as environmental benefits from reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

FORDHAM ROAD CONTINUES TO GO GREEN WITH PUBLIC RECYCLING
In October 2008, public recycling bins were unveiled on Fordham Road. The BID has partnered with the NYC Department of Sanitation and the NYC Departmentof Parks and Recreation to initiate this pilot program. Two locations on Fordham Road: theoverpass on East Fordham Roadand Grand Concourse and the intersection of East Fordham Road and East Kingsbridge Road now offer greenand blue outdoor recycling receptacles. Green receptacles are for newspapersand magazines and blue receptacles are for bottles and cans.
The Fordham Road BID is conducting communityoutreach to encourage the use of these new recycling bins and to increase thepublic’s awareness of which items to recycle. Proper use of the recyclingreceptacles is critical to the success of this program. Cross contaminationfrom trash and other waste will jeopardize the continuation of this recyclingservice, due to its damaging and prohibitive impact. With the help of thecommunity, Fordham Roadwill help to reduce, reuse, and recycle! Thisinitiative comes as a part of continued efforts from the Fordham Road BID toencourage sound and efficient environmental practices. Earlier this year, the BID partnered with the1199SEIU Child Care Corp. to conduct business and resident surveys gauging therecycling and environmentally friendly practices of the Fordham community. These surveys were followed by the Fordham Go Green Walk and an outdoorcommunity fair at Poe Park in May 2008.
